With its enormous size and beautiful singing, the humpback whale is one of the ocean’s most captivating megafauna and has long served as a symbol of its wonder. In a novel finding that calls into question our comprehension of the complexities of marine life, researchers have recorded the first instance of sexual behavior between two male humpback whales. In addition to being the first documented instance of humpback whale copulation on camera, this astounding discovery opens a new chapter in the history of gay behavior in animals.
From their icy feeding grounds to the warm waters where they perform the rituals of mating and raising their young, humpback whales make the epic trek hundreds of miles each year. A group of photographers, Lyle Krannichfeld and Brandi Romano, saw and captured a unique occurrence in these tropical havens that would shock the scientific community. Off the coast of Maui, the photographers watched one whale, identified as Whale B, mount and try copulation with Whale A as two male whales sailed towards their boat. At first, this act—which lasted less than two minutes per attempt—was viewed with suspicion until more research verified the genders of the whales.
Using a technique as unique as a human fingerprint, the tail flukes of both subjects were carefully examined to confirm that they were sexually mature males, revealing that Whale A was at least 13 years old and Whale B was around 30. The fact that these two males were engaging in sexual activity is a first for humpback whale research and provides insight into the variety and complexity of sexual behavior in the animal kingdom.
