A Love Letter to Fallout 4’s Glitches: The Game That Keeps on Giving

Fallout 4 is one amazing, yet brimming-with-uncouthness piece in the realm of gaming. It has given fans hours upon hours of entertainment-from exploring and amazing moments to, quite frankly speaking, annoying moments. But still, it’s a must that one should give credit to Bethesda for leaving it imperfect. That’s the weird part-the glitches have turned into these cute, quirky little things that make Fallout 4 so unique. But it’s when one delves into the realm of the idiosyncratic in Fallout 4 that one gets a sense of just why its glitches have gained a status all their own-and are so special and dear to players’ hearts.

Let’s discuss the workshop DLC and the special book under Shaun’s dresser.

This little exploit lets players duplicate the book with it and endlessly boost their SPECIAL stats. Sure, it’s not how you’re ‘supposed’ to play the game, but there’s just something about finding and using the loopholes that always feels a little too satisfying. Like the game is giving you a wink over the secret handshake with those who are in the know. And, honestly, we’re here for it.

Simple, in fact: place a conveyor with a conveyor storage beside each other, power the conveyors, and then place the used book on the conveyor. As it is about to disappear into the abyss of storage, collect it to duplicate. Repeat this until the special message pops up no more, use the new special book, and voilà! Free points galore. It’s a bug that comes off as a reward for the curious and the clever, serving as just one example of how Fallout 4’s imperfections managed to create a special gaming experience.

Fallout 4 feels alive with quirks, not just exploits.

The Brahmin that somehow end up on rooftops, the companions that get stuck in walls-these glitches make the wasteland unpredictable and sometimes hilarious. It is a method of creating stories, the kind you tell your friends or on forums as you laugh about how such a thing could happen. It’s a reminder that games are crafted by humans, and sometimes those human touches are wonderfully imperfect.

And then there is the community that has coalesced around these glitches. Forums and threads on Reddit filled with players sharing experiences, offering workarounds, and sometimes just commiserating in shared frustrations, are a bonding experience-communal acceptance of the game’s flaws that brings the players closer. In a weird way, these glitches have helped foster a sense of camaraderie and community that’s as strong as any well-crafted game feature.

There’s also the creativity that glitches inspire.

Modders embrace that roughness and sprint with it, crafting content that fixes problems or even makes them better for kicks. Waiting for mods is simply part of the experience with Fallout 4-a testament to how long-lasting and great this game has been, along with a very dedicated fanbase. A cycle of break and build keeps the game fresh, keeps the community involved.

Where anyone else would call it a failure of a game, Fallout 4 has taken glitches and crafted an identity out of it. They remind us that perfection isn’t required for joy and that it is often the flaws that we end up loving more than anything. So, thank you, Bethesda, for not fixing all of Fallout 4’s glitches. They gave us so much more than a game; they gave us a playground for creativity, a source of laughter, and a community with fellow wasteland wanderers. And to the glitches-to those unexpected gifts that keep on giving.

One of the most talked-about updates to come to the gaming world, and for good reason: bringing back the favorite RPG into the modern era, with improved graphics, performance, and so on. Like with any major update, it has been a mixed bag of both fixes and new bugs that have left players with mixed feelings in general.

Indeed, it’s a powerhouse for Fallout 4 into the current generation-this means the post-apocalyptic RPG can finally hit 4K resolution on both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There are two modes that players will be able to toggle between: Quality, which will target 30 FPS at 4K resolution on ultra settings, and Performance, which targets 60 FPS with dynamic resolution scaling. A big improvement over the original release, adding fresh looks to the Commonwealth.

The update hasn’t come without some minor kinks: for instance, players on Xbox Series X|S have had to bear with a bug where selecting Quality mode doesn’t actually do anything and harnessed the game back to 60 FPS without enhancement in visual details. To anyone who has interest in the great graphics of Fallout 4, that’s been quite a disappointment. A point brought forward by Digital Foundry’s Thomas Morgan himself, who expressed, ‘Disabling the performance mode seemingly does nothing. It stays at 60fps and the res bound stays the same.’

The update on the PlayStation side of things has not been devoid of woes either. Specifically, players who claimed Fallout 4 as a free PS Plus offering found themselves unable to access the next-gen update without its additional cost. Bethesda addressed the problem, claiming that this next-gen update will be free for PS Plus Extra members who have claimed the game via the subscription service. They further called for patience as they work around the problem, stating this in their tweet of April 25, 2024:.

The PC version of the update introduced some very welcome changes: official support for wide and ultrawide screens, updates to the Fallout 4 Creation Kit. Spurred on by these improvements, its been a great time to be a PC player-a group of gamers that have enjoyed a markedly superior Fallout 4 experience than console players for quite some time thanks to mods and better performance.

Besides that, the company has also been smashing bugs. Hundreds of fixes are listed in the patch notes for everything from technical issues and save data problems to locked missions and beyond. As is often the case, though, new updates bring new bugs, and the community is keeping a watchful eye out for whatever pops up.

Some great new content has arrived with the update.

The Echoes of the Past questline is related to Fallout 3, and there are new guns, Power Armor, and outfits to find. New missions like When Pigs Fly and All Hallow’s Eve add even more content, such as the Makeshift Weapon Pack with its Nail Gun and Baseball Launcher, along with Halloween-themed settlement decorations.

The update timing was strategic, considering that the Fallout 4 game had just reached its zenith in popularity with the release of the Fallout Prime Video series. Bethesda looked to capitalize on that, but the various issues across platforms have been a stumbling block.

Reactions to the update have indeed been mixed within the community: some players are grateful for the added content and the improvement, while others are angry about the new bugs that have appeared, along with the problems accessing the update. This is reflected in the forums and social media, where topics range from excitement over new features to disappointment and requests for further fixes.

Fallout 4’s glitchy history has shown both sides of the coin: those who want a perfectly functioning game and those who embrace its imperfections. That is what this next-gen update has brought into focus, whereby gamers expect it with open arms, embracing whatever bugs may still be inside. This proves the game-much like its community-has retained their dedication over these years, with or without the perfect connection that the game and its players have with one another. New or veteran, Fallout 4’s imperfect world continues to fascinate.

I’d rather write that Bethesda’s relationship with the Fallout community is complex, and even though it really should get a little smoother, the important thing is that the company updates and improves its games. But what really sets the Fallout fandom apart is how resilient and resourceful the community is in working out such problems. Modders fix problems themselves, players help out with tips on workarounds, and all these collaborative approaches make this game relevant to this date.

We grumble about the bugs, about the glitches. But deep down, we know they’re part of what makes Fallout 4 that game we can’t help but return to again and again. To the next-gen update, all its promises and pitfalls, and to the community making Fallout 4 an experience one will hardly forget.
