Big news is breaking from the world of craft beer! James Watt, the co-founder who has helmed BrewDog for a remarkable 17 years, is stepping down from his chief executive role.
This significant leadership change sees Watt transitioning into a non-executive position on the BrewDog PLC board. His new title will be “captain and co-founder,” a nod to his foundational role in building the now-famous brand.
Rest assured, Watt isn’t leaving the company entirely. He remains a major shareholder, keeping a significant stake in the business he helped build from the ground up over nearly two decades.
Stepping into the top leadership spot as CEO is James Arrow. He’s been part of the BrewDog team since September 2023, serving as the Chief Operating Officer.
BrewDog confirmed that this transition has been in the works for a while, part of a succession plan that the company says was put in place last year.
BrewDog chair Allan Leighton shed some light on the timing, highlighting that the move was set up well in advance. He explained that James Watt had spoken to him last year about how he could continue contributing to the business while also creating space for other endeavors and interests.
James Watt himself shared his feelings about the change, expressing his deep connection to the company’s journey. He stated, “I have loved co-founding this amazing business and leading it for the last 17 years.”
Looking ahead, Watt seems genuinely excited about the personal time this change will afford him. He mentioned his plans, saying, “I am excited to take a bit of time off, to travel, to spend more time with my family and friends.”
Crucially, he also highlighted his intention to dedicate more energy to his other business interests. This signals that while he’s shifting roles at BrewDog, his entrepreneurial spirit remains very much alive.
Allan Leighton spoke highly of the incoming CEO, James Arrow, describing him as a “proven leader.” The board is clearly enthusiastic about this new chapter, with Leighton stating they were delighted to have Arrow lead BrewDog “into its next phase of growth.”
Arrow brings valuable experience to the table, having previously served as the managing director at Boots Opticians. Leighton noted that recruiting Arrow was a strategic move intended to “strengthen the wider senior leadership team.”
While the official narrative points to a planned succession and Watt seeking new horizons, it’s fair to say that many observers in the industry are also considering other factors. There’s widespread questioning in the industry regarding whether controversies that have continually embroiled the brand in recent years played a role in encouraging Watt to step down for the sake of the brand’s reputation.
Indeed, BrewDog and James Watt have faced considerable scrutiny on several fronts over the past few years. These challenges have often put the brand and its leadership in the spotlight.
