If you turn on your PC or game console, the familiar Rockstar Games logo pops up, and before long, the vast and beautiful vistas of Red Dead Redemption 2 spring to life before your very eyes once more. Five years since it came out, the game’s graphics remain a barometer by which the developers have been able to hone the technology and artistry in one masterpiece.
A world that will have you explore every inch of it—with equal measure, beauty, and adventure on its merit. I can attest to the game’s ongoing appeal, as I myself have spent over 4,000 hours playing the storyline alone. Five years later, that still hasn’t been topped in presentation and realism, and I am still blown away every time I fire it up.
Not by accident, but with careful planning, creativity, and a profound comprehension of what makes a game really immersive, Rockstar was able to create the enchantment that permeates RDR2’s environment. Because of this enchantment, I and many others are even more eager to see what marvels GTA6 may have in store. Before we turn our attention to the future, however, let’s examine the history and present of RDR2, a game that still surpasses almost all AAA titles.
The term ‘AAA’ is informal but significant in gaming.
It’s a designation that raises expectations sky-high, offering players a gaming experience developed with a big money both in development and marketing. Think of it as the video game equivalent of a blockbuster movie: enormous, visually impressive, and aimed to lure you into its world from the minute you click ‘start’. RDR2 is the peak of a AAA title, and then some.
It’s been an intriguing storyline, the rise of AAA games, despite it’s in the late 1990s. That’s when game merchants began using the word in assessing interest in new items. And by the time Squaresoft published Final Fantasy VII in 1997, the notion of a blockbuster video game had completely come together. Estimated to have cost between $40-45 million at the time, it was the most costly game ever made. Replete with dramatic CGI, a symphonic music, and inventive gameplay, it reinvented what a video game might be.
Fast forward to the late 2000s, when AAA game production costs are in the tens of millions, and big-name sequels like Halo 3 have a combined development and marketing budget of $70 million. During the seventh generation of consoles, the number of developer firms releasing AAA games dropped, while the ones that remained in business got larger and more ambitious. The decade also witnessed a trend of narrative-driven games, in which developers were seeking to discover new methods of mixing storylines into gameplay, as seen in such titles as Half-Life.
By the time of “RDR2,” that landscape had already changed quite a bit. The initial projection for the game’s cost was $265 million—more than enough to prove it’s ambitious. Setting a new standard in the gaming experience is more important than just another game. It did. The continuity of the game’s world, the exactness of environmental design, and attention to detail all come together for a deep visual presentation, something unprecedented today.
What makes RDR2’s visuals stand the test of time?
There are so many contributing components to this. The environments in the game are a masterclass in virtual world construction. From the sandy roads to the snowy summits, each landscape is detailed to perfection. Everything, from the lighting and weather effects to the interactions between people and the natural environment, is meant to pull you in and make you feel like you’re part of this world.
That same devotion to realism penetrates the game in its character models and motions. Some may contend that other games have more beautiful character models, but few titles deliver as comprehensive a package overall as RDR2. How characters move and interact with their surroundings helps decide how immersive the game is.
But that is not all there is to it; the visual narrative in RDR2 is second to none. It expresses mood, character, and tale without saying a single word via its images. What truly sets RDR2 apart from its peers is its ability to utilize its surroundings to create a tale.
It still fares quite well against the most current games of the previous year or two, such as Resident Evil 8, Forza Horizon 5, or Cyberpunk 2077. Better visuals aren’t about having the most sophisticated possible to offer the player with a beautiful and engaging experience on an emotional level. And RDR2 achieves it better than nearly any game out there.
There is no question that RDR2 has set the bar to a new height, to which all future games, notably the much-anticipated GTA6, will have to aspire. But this just serves to remind us of the medium’s potential to constantly push the frontier of what’s imaginable, narrate tales that affect us, and construct worlds in which we may immerse ourselves. Years after its debut, and RDR2 remains a masterwork that inspires and impresses people. It’s more than a game.
The AAA market continues to evolve.
The expense of AAA production continued to grow, with games like Grand Theft Auto V having budgets that rivalled that of big feature films. This period also witnessed the growth of the independent gaming sector, which offered a counterpoint to the AAA market by delivering new and experimental products that frequently took risks that bigger companies could not afford.
The AAA industry receives criticism for favoring visuals above gameplay innovation, resulting to a surge in the ‘AA’ sector noted for merging indie charm with high production qualities. Workplace difficulties like ‘crunch time’ are also widespread in the business.
The arrival of ‘AAA+’ games has seen the adoption of games-as-a-service models, where the initial purchase is simply the beginning of a game’s income stream. This has been a double-edged sword, providing gamers with continued material but also raising issues about the worth and ethics of post-purchase revenue.

RDR2 is a monument to the heights that can be achieved. Its unparalleled graphical quality, complex plot, and immersive universe have set the bar by which all products will be judged in the future. It’s a dazzling example of what happens when technological skill and creative vision come together in a team and is the beacon upon which the future of AAA gaming will hang its hat.
