The reason behind this increased security is clear: a significant rise in retail theft. Reports indicate that a large percentage of retailers saw a notable increase in organized retail crime in 2022. Shoplifting, particularly at self-checkouts, has become a major challenge for stores.

Retailers are trying a variety of strategies to combat this. Beyond locking up goods, companies like Costco are stationing staff at exits to check receipts against carts. Sam’s Club is testing new AI technology that allows customers to scan items on their app as they shop and pay in-app, moving away from traditional self-checkouts entirely. Walmart itself is even embedding giant hidden barcodes into product packaging that scanners can read, even if shoppers just see regular designs.

While these measures are aimed at reducing losses, they certainly impact the shopping experience. Waiting for an employee to unlock an item can turn a quick trip into a much longer one. This inconvenience has led some shoppers to express their frustration online, with comments like, “I’m walking out of any store that does that” or simply leaving without the item if they can’t find help.

It’s a tricky balance for retailers. While locking items reduces theft, studies have shown that such practices can also lead to a significant drop in sales, sometimes by as much as 25%. One CEO even admitted that locking away everyday items hadn’t curbed theft and had instead “dramatically hit sales.

So, what’s the future of shopping look like as stores grapple with this? The good news is that technology is stepping up! Walmart is currently testing out a promising solution: smart keys on smartphones. Employees at hundreds of locations are using this system to unlock cabinets, making the process faster.

If these smart keys prove effective, the plan is to potentially roll them out to loyalty members.
