Ingredients

Main
  • 2 slices bread
  • 1 teaspoon butter at room temperature
  • 2 slices sharp Cheddar cheese

Equipment

  • 1 Air Fryer Essential for crispy results without excess oil.
  • 1 Butter Knife or Offset Spatula For even application of butter on bread.
  • 1 Spatula For flipping and carefully removing the hot sandwich.

Method

  1. Ensure butter is at room temperature for easy, even spreading on the exterior of both bread slices.
  2. Place one slice of bread, buttered-side down, on a clean surface. Lay the two slices of sharp Cheddar cheese on top.
  3. Cover with the second slice of bread, buttered-side up, forming the sandwich.
  4. Carefully place the assembled sandwich into the air fryer basket. Ensure it's centered and not touching the sides.
  5. Cook at 350°F (175°C) for 4-5 minutes, or until the bottom side is golden brown.
  6. Using a spatula, gently flip the sandwich.
  7. Continue to cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is thoroughly melted and bubbly.
  8. Carefully remove the grilled cheese from the air fryer with the spatula.
  9. Allow to rest for 1 minute before slicing diagonally, if desired.
  10. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

Ensure your butter is genuinely at room temperature; this is critical for achieving a uniform, golden crust. For superior melt and flavor, consider using freshly grated sharp cheddar. Air fryer temperatures can vary, so monitor your sandwich closely, especially after the initial flip, to prevent over-browning while ensuring the cheese is perfectly gooey. To elevate, a thin slice of a ripe tomato or a sprinkle of finely chopped chives tucked inside before cooking can add a delightful fresh element.
