Ingredients

Main
  • 5 tablespoons paprika
  • 3 tablespoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 2 tablespoons dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon white pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper

Equipment

  • 1 Measuring Spoons For accurate spice measurement.
  • 1 Mixing Bowl Medium-sized for combining ingredients.
  • 1 Whisk or Fork For thorough blending of spices.
  • 1 Airtight Container Essential for proper storage and freshness.

Method

  1. Gather and accurately measure all specified dried spices: paprika, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried basil, dried thyme, black pepper, white pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Transfer all measured spices into a medium-sized mixing bowl, ensuring all ingredients are added.
  3. Using a whisk or a fork, thoroughly combine the spices in the bowl. Whisk vigorously for 1-2 minutes to ensure an even distribution of all ingredients and to break up any potential clumps.
  4. Once fully blended, carefully transfer the homemade Creole seasoning into a clean, airtight container. A funnel can be helpful for this step if using a container with a small opening.
  5. Securely seal the container and store it in a cool, dark pantry or cupboard away from direct sunlight and heat to maintain its freshness and potency for up to 6 months.

Notes

For optimal flavor, ensure all your dried spices are fresh and aromatic. Old spices lose potency, resulting in a dull blend. Adjust the cayenne pepper to control the heat level; for a milder blend, reduce it, or for more kick, add a touch more. The salt content can also be customized based on your dietary needs or intended use. Store the finished seasoning blend in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to preserve its potency and extend its shelf life for up to 6 months. This blend is incredibly versatile, perfect for seasoning proteins like chicken, fish, and shrimp, or for enhancing classic Creole dishes like gumbo, jambalaya, and étouffée.
