Ingredients

Main
  • 2 teaspoons about 3-4g organic culinary matcha green tea powder
  • 6 tablespoons 90 ml hot water (at 175ºF)
  • ½ cup 120 ml Vanilla Dream Ice Cream

Equipment

  • 1 Matcha Bowl A small ceramic bowl or mug can be used as an alternative.
  • 1 Bamboo Matcha Whisk (Chasen) A small metal whisk or fork can be used for whisking if a chasen is unavailable.
  • 1 Measuring Spoons
  • 1 Liquid Measuring Cup
  • 2 Serving Glasses or Bowls Preferably chilled to keep the ice cream from melting too quickly.

Method

  1. Measure 2 teaspoons (3-4g) of organic culinary matcha powder into a matcha bowl or small mug.
  2. Heat 6 tablespoons (90 ml) of fresh water to precisely 175°F (80°C) to ensure optimal matcha flavor without bitterness.
  3. Carefully pour the hot water over the matcha powder in the bowl.
  4. Using a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) or a small metal whisk, whisk the matcha vigorously in an 'M' or 'W' motion until a smooth, frothy layer forms on top.
  5. Scoop ½ cup (120 ml) of high-quality vanilla ice cream into two chilled serving glasses or small bowls.
  6. Immediately and gently pour the freshly whisked hot matcha over the scoops of vanilla ice cream in each glass.
  7. Serve the Matcha Affogato without delay, allowing the hot matcha to slowly melt the ice cream, creating a delightful blend of temperatures and flavors.

Notes

For optimal flavor and froth, always use high-quality culinary or ceremonial grade matcha. Ensure your water is precisely 175°F (80°C); hotter water can scorch the matcha, leading to a bitter taste, while cooler water won't extract its full flavor. When whisking, aim for a smooth, frothy consistency – a rapid 'M' or 'W' motion helps achieve this. Serve immediately to enjoy the contrast of hot matcha and melting cold ice cream. Experiment with different ice cream flavors like coconut or even a second scoop of matcha ice cream for an intensified experience. A sprinkle of additional matcha powder or a fresh mint leaf makes for an elegant garnish.
